Introducing Lean-er UX: Getting the benefits of lean, with techniques your manager will actually let you use

Many UX teams struggle to do their best work in an increasingly agile world. Lean UX offers solutions, but they are radically different from what most UX teams are used to, with different processes, deliverables, roles and responsibilities, and unpredictable scheduling. Lean UX techniques are mostly unproven—especially for large, distributed teams—and often don't get manager support. Worse is that many lean techniques are poorly defined. What exactly is an MVP? Which hypotheses do you really need to validate? How? If you have tried to make your team leaner but your manager won’t let you, this workshop is for you.

The goal of lean UX is to develop products that our customers actually want, make better decisions while minimizing waste, and get teams to work more effectively. “Lean-er” UX strives to achieve these same goals, but using more traditional tools, techniques, and team roles—things your manager will actually let you do.

This workshop is structured around the three goals of lean UX (building the right product, minimizing waste, better teamwork) to build a simple mobile app in small teams. It assumes that you need to make the best decisions you can, but with little time and minimal user research. In the end, you will have a strong understanding of how to make better design decisions quickly and confidently—in less than ideal circumstances—and how to get your team onboard.

Developing human-centered UX strategy

Ensuring that our research and design is user-centered is well known to most UX designers however, when it comes to strategy, there is a tendency to fall back on business objectives that often are not customer centric. This workshop will reveal how to place users’ psychological drivers and goals at the very heart of UX strategy and how relationship models can be used as a tool to:

  • Ensure that UX strategy finds its way into design solutions

Keynote - Designing for Cultural Diversity

Globalisation, localisation or cross-cultural design has been a theme for at least the last 10 years. In a globally connected and mass-production world, what role does culture play in product and service design? This talk investigates what defines culture and to what extent cultural diversity will influence our work as designers or strategists. It explores if localisation means only to consider macro level cultural differences between countries, or if there is also a need to look at it at the micro level, where you see differences within a country or even a community. We will then look into what cross-cultural design means when designing for the African market.

Designing for the unpredictable, not all users are digital natives

All to often project work presents itself in predictable ways. Project clients, requirement formats, team structure, and the design processes are very typical, and even comfortable. Then there are those product design projects that requires a completely different approach, and turns everything up side down.

User Experience Strategy Fundamentals

UX Strategy Fundamentals is aimed at senior UX practitioners, strategists and people leaders who want to have a greater impact in their companies/clients/teams than just delivering great designs, and start making more of a strategic impact at senior level.
The talk will define what a good UX Strategy looks like, and how it can be applied within your own organisation.

NSFW UX - is a collaborative talk by Tomislav Kozacinski ( and Aleks Curac Saric (, both professional comedians as well as designers, about how porn industry shaped and advanced development of technology trough history, and how porn sites, mainly Pornhub and Tumblr, change and adapt their design to better tailor user experience of their members and (more than frequent) visitors, how they cater the user needs and some related statistics as well.

What eye tracking really contributes to UX and usability evaluation

Eye tracking is expensive. It requires specialised equipment and skills and thorough data analysis takes time and effort. Is it worth doing? In this talk I will reflect on eye tracking experiments conducted over the past five years showing concrete evidence that eye tracking reveals design problems that would be very difficult to identify through any other method.

The Learning and UX Dichotomy

There is a silent dichotomy between learning design and ux design that go unnoticed in most organizations. What on the obvious side shouldn't be in contradiction actually is. Because they don't work together they actually become at odds with each other. I explore with practical examples the impact this has, and how our thinking institutionalizes this dichotomy. I further provide simple steps that any organization can make today that will impact in measurable terms their ux practice as well as there learning practice while at the same time increasing happy adoption of products, systems and services in both their employees and clients.

Design Thinking and Agile

The challenges in introducing design thinking to organisations and teams include educating all parties on the benefits of design thinking activities through practice. This can be achieved by making small marginal changes to existing processes or ceremonies with the goal of improved communication, ideating, and collaboration in problem solving and solution design. One of the key aspects is having all parties involved and invested towards the overall goal - this includes a time and attention from stakeholders as well as the development team. Communication between all parties is crucial. Activities of design thinking help in nurturing communication and collaboration. Improvement in these areas tend to result in better solutions for business and the direct users. It also results in more productive and motivated teams. An important note is not to forcefully include design thinking practices for the sake of it. The activities and approach needs to be carefully thought about and gauged to determine if the right design thinking practices are used in the right areas, if the practices are improving anything, as well as determine the team's sentiment.

Persuasive UX: How to make your case, get your team onboard, and talk managers and clients out of idiotic design ideas

One challenge all designers have is persuading their team, managers, and clients to make good decisions and talking them out of bad ones. Unfortunately, great design doesn’t sell itself, and it’s all too easy to appease the people paying your salary. Design discussions often devolve into subjective battles over personal opinion, and designers often lose such battles.

In this talk, Everett will summarize the techniques designers use to sell their designs and why they often fail. He will then present six practical techniques to sell your design ideas persuasively based on design tools, principles, and user research, while removing subjectivity and personal opinion from the discussion. Each technique will be illustrated with practical examples.

Done is better than perfect - a case study

Typical projects with typical clients have tight budgets and tight deadlines, which makes it hard to put UX theory into practice. With so much focus in the UX community on Faux UX, there is a lot of pressure to “do it right, or not at all”. When pitching for these projects, it becomes tempting to leave the UX practitioners or processes out rather than fighting for their place in the project. Good design practices are not just for certified UX practitioners. Every project can benefit from following user-centred design and development processes, whether implemented textbook-right or cowboy-style. This presentation shares experiences and outcomes from a recent project which implemented a user-centred design approach and agile development methodology. This case study shows how introducing UX practices, even if only imperfectly, not only turned a struggling project around, but added value by reducing development time & costs; increasing stakeholder buy-in; and creating excitement among the product users.


Combining Empathy and Data in User Experience

My talk is all about empathy in design thinking and how designers can leverage on data to better understand their users in UX design. I will talk about my learnings and experience working as a UX designer in a data driven company, and how we combine empathy and data as user experience designers at


In a world in which we live, the apparent and overwhelming sense of apathy makes us often feel like robots or cogs pushing out something not necessary but desired. All designers need "passion projects". Some how, along the way we all seem to die inside and lose the spirit of the 100 crayon box of our youth.

The hard truth about Omni-channel in South Africa

Omni-channel has been a hot topic for years but many areas remain undefined; I will introduce what it is and it's implemented business value. I'll then tackle the hard truths of the South African context (e.g. technical constraints, security overloads). I'll conclude with practical tips including initiation; obtaining stakeholder buy-in; and refining the end product.

Mark Kamau is an ardent believer Human Centered Design. He has practiced design extensively for over 15 years both in Africa and Europe. He focuses on designing for African markets now, doing consulting for Ideo, Stanford school, Google emerging markets among others. He is the regional coordinator for IXDA and is a board member for Impact advisory board. He has been involved in UX work across over 15 countries in the continent. He founded the UX lab at the iHub and UX Nairobi. He is currently the UX lead at BRCK, a Kenyan technology company that designs hardware for African contexts. He is interested in designing for rural populations and people at the edge of the grid, outdoor living and chai tea.
