Everyday Form Footguns
Workshop Overview: With the advent of Web 2.0 nearly three decades ago, our collective digital experience shifted from one that mimicked the static media of old to one grounded in co-creation, configuration, and curation. Over time, there has been an explosion of novel and exploratory ways in which users can interact with this new digital world. However, when looking at the beating heart of our daily interactions with these landscapes, we still find the ubiquitous digital form—whether we are searching Google, sending a message on WhatsApp, leaving a comment on LinkedIn, filtering shows on Netflix, sharing a file on Google Drive, making a purchase on Takealot, creating an account on Figma, doing SARS e-filing, or even registering for a workshop.
Yet, this critical role played by forms, mixed with their deceptive simplicity at face value, leads to a perfect storm of what Heydon Pickering calls a "10,000-volt electromagnet for attracting usability problems." In this workshop, we will explore real-world product, business, and usability considerations to keep in mind when thinking about form structure and behavior. We will also look at how you can make a case for spending additional resources on forms within your team and address some common anti-patterns that can be easily avoided.

How to Interpret (RAW)R
Workshop Overview: In the workshop titled "How to Interpret (RAW)R," participants will embark on an exploration of raw data analysis in UX research. They will delve into the fundamental concepts of raw data and its critical role in shaping user experiences. Through engaging exercises and real-world examples, attendees will gain practical insights into both qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques, learning how to extract meaningful insights and identify potential pitfalls in data interpretation. A key focus of the workshop is understanding the nuances of raw data and what to look out for when analysing it. Participants will explore the intricacies of qualitative and quantitative data, refining their skills in extracting actionable insights while navigating common challenges in data interpretation. While various topics will be covered, including the integration of qualitative and quantitative findings, the central theme of the workshop is empowering participants to harness the power of raw data to drive meaningful improvements in UX. By the conclusion of the session, attendees will leave equipped with practical skills and knowledge to confidently interpret raw data and make informed decisions in their UX practice.

Workshop Overview: Rapid prototyping enables designers to swiftly create a tangible, interactive prototype for pre-development testing and validation. In this workshop I will take you through how we would position Rapid Prototyping for my clients, leverage tools like the lean canvas to challenge stakeholder assumptions and use objective design principles. We'll discuss research and refine features for a streamlined, high value, high output rapid prototyping product that delivers maximum value for clients. During the workshop we'll complete hands-on activities together so that participants are engaged throughout and walk away with the skills to add rapid prototyping to their design toolbox.

Tips and techniques from theatre for enhancing empathy and user engagement
Workshop Overview: Empathy for people lies at the heart of user experience work. Questions like “Who might use our products and services?”, “How, when, where and why might people use our products and services?”, and “How can we improve users’ experience with our products and services?” require empathy and engagement. It is difficult to train empathy and related soft skills, like observation and active listening. Enter Constantin Stanislavski. An actor and director in early 20th century Russia, he developed a system of practical tools and exercises for teaching actors to portray characters with truth and a sense of reality. This work is highly relevant to the field of UX, in particular the development of empathy for users and insight into their goals and tasks. His techniques can be used to train UX practitioners through exploring and understanding their own emotions and memories, and working on skills in observation, concentration and the use of imagination. In this workshop, we will explore Stanislavski’s techniques and practical exercises for improving empathy, observation, and focussed attention. Participants in this workshop will leave with an understanding of the foundation of Stanislavski’s system and a toolbox of useful and fun exercises to practice and share.
